Mary Sochan

Mary Wionzek was born  April 15,1930 on the family farm near Rama,SK to Frank and Katie Wionzek.

On August 27, 1949 she married Ted Sochan in Preeceville. They started their married life in Flin Flon before moving to Creighton where they raised their 4 daughters. Their family would grow to include 4 son-in-laws, 10 grandchildren, 22 great- grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. Mom & Dad lived in the house dad built until 2011. Then they moved to Copper Mill Manor. After dad's passing in 2012 mom continued to live there until moving to Northern Lights Manor in June 2023.

In addition to being a homemaker and mom she also worked as a waitress, then in housekeeping at the hospital, then custodian at the  school and then with homecare. Mom was a very talented seamstress. Always having a new dress for that special occasion, sometimes making up her own pattern. She kept us girls well dressed in the clothes she made right up to wedding gowns and bridesmaid dresses. She also enjoyed  making quilts for her kids and grand kids as well as many skating outfits and Halloween costumes. Mom also enjoyed crocheting, making many doilies, doll clothes and afghans. We all have one of her beautiful afghans and each of her great-grandchildren has a baby blanket crocheted by their Baba. She donated an afghan annually to the church bazaar. She continued to crochet until her poor eyesight and arthritic hands would no longer allow her to do so.

Mom & Dad loved to camp whether it was close to home or far away. With their 5th wheel in tow, they travelled western Canada, north to Alaska and through the northern parts of the U.S. We all enjoyed many family camping outings with them.

Mom prepared delicious meals for her family which included her home-made bread and perogies that we all loved.  There were many Saturday mornings we would wake up to the smell of fresh doughnuts. Sugared doughnut holes for breakfast. Yummy. The traditional 12 meatless dishes for Ukrainian Christmas Eve was one of her specialties.

Mom enjoyed watching her favorite Blue Jays on TV and in the winter watching curling. I'm sure she knew all the players by their first name. Mom enjoyed playing cards. I remember the time Mom, Dad, Ernie and I were playing a game of 31 and we broke into laughter as mom's teeth went sailing across the table.

On one of my last visits Mom, Jo-Ann and I were discussing last names. Jo-Ann said to Mom “What's my last name?” We could see the thoughts running through her head so Jo-Ann said “What's Albert's last name?” to which mom promptly replied “It's the same as yours.” We all burst into laughter and I can still hear her laugh.

We were so fortunate to have you with us for so many years.

Love you mom. Say hi to Dad.

Of all the special gifts in life

however great or small,

to have you as our Mom

was the greatest gift of all.

May the winds of love blow softly

and whisper in your ear

and wish that you were here”

A silent thought, a secret tear

keeps your memory ever near

in our hearts forever.
