MARIA WOLTERS

1928-2026

Maria was born in Leeuwarden, Netherland, June 22,1928. She was the oldest of 8 children and lived her early years growing up in Holland with her six sisters and one brother.
Maria enjoyed growing up through many good times with her loving family as well as through the challenges of the Second World War. As a young woman she was romanced and married to Sixtus (Sid) Wolters. The two were married in Netherlands where they start their family. After having their first son, Evert, in Holland, she and her Husband set off on a new adventure emigrating to Canada.
Maria, Sid and Evert landed in Halifax after a stormy rough passage across the Atlantic but being the strong young woman she was, she persisted. Next stop was Yorkton, Saskatchewan where the Canadian adventure continued. She raised the family on a small farm while Sid worked as a baker. Two more boys Jim and John joined the family in Yorkton. Eventually, the family relocated to Winnipeg, Manitoba where they made their home for many years.
The relocation to Winnipeg saw Maria grow her family with two more children. After three boys, two girls, Henrietta and Anita rounded out the mix.
Maria continued to enjoy the growing family. She welcomed other family members to Canada always making her home the welcoming place. She greeted everyone with a smile and a welcoming warm glow.
Unfortunately, there were challenging times as well and Maria and her family endured the untimely passing for her first-born son Evert. These were tough times but being the amazing woman she was she endured continued to focus on family.
The family continued to grow into life with many fun times. These times include activities like playing cards and table games. Outdoor activities included the crazy toboggan rides in Winnipeg. These were more like bobsled than toboggan. The entire family would ride the toboggan with Maria in the center of the mix. Laughing and crashing were the best fun. Time with family was everything to Maria. Being of Dutch descent skating on speed skates was also great fun, again all with the family.
Summertime took Maria and her family to one of her favorite places, West Hawk Lake in the Manitoba Whiteshell. Camping and spending entire summers were some of the happiest times of the year. Especially the opportunity to get soft ice cream. The bigger the better.
Maria’s love and caring for her family was illustrated in many ways. One of the more visible examples was that all her children were always exceptionally dressed. Always neat, clean and styled. This was her standard for herself and her family. Family was the most important thing in her life.
Maria never lost touch with family, there were a number of trips back to Holland over the years, these were very special to Maria. The trips were supplemented with long duration overseas phone calls.
While family was the core, this core was well supported by a community of Dutch friends, which she absolutely loved the adored. She kept connected with these friends her entire life.
Maria’s life of adventure continued to advance when the family decided to take on a new challenge with the opening of a Bakery and Coffee Shop in Flin Flon, Manitoba. She gave up the family home in Winnipeg to move north and create a new world once again.
After many years in Flin Flon for the winter and fun times at the Cabin at Denare Beach it was time for retirement. Retirement was exciting; for 12 years Maria and Sid enjoyed winters in Arizona. They enjoyed the sun and relaxed life pace.
Finally, they returned to Steinbach, Manitoba for their continued retirement. After more than 60 years of marriage Sid passed suddenly. Maria then moved to Winnipeg where she continued to live independently but still supported by her loving family.
In more recent years Maria returned to Flin Flon and Northern Lights Manor as she required some support. Maria was on the doorstep of 98 years old when she passed on May 31, 2026. She was surrounded by family in her final time.
Maria was predeceased by her husband Sixtus (Sid) and her son Evert. She is survived by son Jim (Sharon), son John, daughter Henrietta (Gerry), and daughter Anita (Chris). She is also survived by seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Maria was a happy, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She loved life, love to joke and laugh. Time spent with family and friends was everything. Everyone was always met with a smile and love. Maria loved to tease and joke, she also loved to be teased in fun. Afterward, you would always here her say “Oh You” with a laugh and a little of a Dutch accent.
Maria Wolters a wonderful woman, with a full life well lived.
