Edwin Martin Obituary

Edwin John Martin passed away peacefully Thursday March 28, 2024 at the age of 94 with his wife and daughters at his side. Ed will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 73 years, Therese; his daughters: Jan Hills (Terry), Barb McCaig ( Randy) and Donna Martin ( Larry); his grandchildren: Kevin and Jim Hills, Brian, Korene (McCaig), Tami (Fleury), Tana ( Huberdeau) and Traci (Cluff) ,their spouses, and 17 great grandchildren.

The eldest of 16 children, Ed is survived by brothers, Barrie, Brian, Terry, Richard, Calvin, Allen and Harvey and sisters, Dodie and Beverly. Ed was predeceased by his parents Julius and Jane Martin, brothers Bob, Don, Vernon and Lannie, and sisters Darlene and Janis.

Ed was born in Kindersley,  Saskatchewan on September 22, 1929 and shortly thereafter, moved with his family to Flin Flon, MB, where he completed his schooling and began working for Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting. He married Therese Marie Lavergne on June 29, 1950, and together, they raised their three daughters, building wonderful memories for each other along the way.

He lived a full and vibrant life, touched the lives of many people, and who didn’t notice those baby blue eyes of his! He loved his family and was a great friend to those who knew him.

People who knew Ed have shared that he was: a family man, true gentleman, classy, a good neighbour, a beautiful man, a great guy with a keen sense of humour, kind and sweet, a well-respected co-worker/mentor/boss, warm with a calm presence, a fine sportsman, always friendly and smiling, and an active community member.

Ed started at HBM& S in the mill in Flin Flon in 1948, and then moved to the assay lab as a chemist working his way up to chief metallurgical control supervisor, and ended his career as metallurgical control/surface and transportation superintendent.

Ed had many hobbies including fishing and hunting, camping throughout western Canada, golfing and curling. He was a fine poet and was also always making up witty rhymes to entertain those around him! He also enjoyed playing cards and occasional Coruba rum. Ed was president of Willowpark Curling Club and the Phantom Lake Golf Course in Flin Flon. Ed and Therese travelled to Hawaii, Barbados and Cuba, and spent many winters at their Arizona home.

Ed and Therese lived in Flin Flon, MB, until he retired and then moved out to their cottage at Bakers Narrows Mb.

Ed and Therese moved to Brandon MB in 2006, and recently moved to the PCH in Shoal Lake, MB where they lived together until Ed’s passing.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Augustine’s of Canterbury Church, 327 4th Street, Brandon, MB on Tuesday, April 16, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be held in Flin Flon, MB at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army.
